Riley and Son (E) limited offer a full range of wheelset services to the railway industry, from tyre turning to complete assembly and machining. Our wheel lathe is capable of turning wheels up to 6’ in diameter and we are fully accredited to Railway Group Standard GM./RT 2470. We are on the Railway Saftey and Standards Board list of approved suppliers for the assembly, overhaul and repair of wheelsets for use on the national network.

We have recently completed the assembly of 3 brand new Bulleid Tender wheelsets for Southern Locomotives Limited.. This complex task included the machining of 3 brand new axles, pressing of the wheels onto the axles and fitting and machining the tyres.

One of the new Bulleid wheels, machined and ready to be pressed onto the Axle.

Using our 400 Ton press, the wheels are pressed onto the axle.

After pressing, the wheels are then put back on the lathe to machine them concentric and true to the axle centers before the new tyres are fitted.

Finally the tyres are fitted and profiled to the required specification.

And after a primer and undercoat, the finished wheelsets are ready for delivery.
