Riley and Son purchased LMS 4-6-0 Black 5 Number 44871, the the third addition to our home stable, on Wednesday the 20th of September 2006 and 44871 has since been moved into our works for restoration to full mainline running condition, including fitment of AWS, TPWS and OTMR and air brakes. At the moment we estimate she will be in running in Autumn/Winter 2008.

The overhaul of 44871 reached an important milestone on 3rd of July when the first of the new plates was fitted to the boiler. The new throat plate has now been welded into place and the stay holes are being drilled out.

Over the last week, machinist David Smith has bored out both cylinders and is currently machining the valve liners to suit.

44871’s tender chassis is now receiving a final coat of paint and it is expected that we will re-wheel the tender over the next week or so.
